This year\u2019s AIE panel at BIME, titled <\/b>“<\/span>Building a Music Career: A Beautiful (and Not-So-Easy) Path<\/i><\/b>,” took place on Wednesday, September 30, in Pro Room I at the Euskalduna Palace, the central hub of the fair\u2019s professional activities.<\/span><\/p>\n In a relaxed conversation, artists <\/span>Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Llergo and Pablo Benegas<\/b>, founding member and guitarist of La Oreja de Van Gogh, shared with moderator <\/span>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Sebasti\u00e1n<\/b>, host of Radio 3’s \u201cQue parezca un accidente\u201d, <\/span>the challenges they faced early in their careers and the experiences that shaped them as artists<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0When asked <\/span>how music came into their lives and about the source of their creative drive, Pablo Benegas shared that there is no single path to enter this world; in his case, friendship was the spark that ignited his journey<\/b>, driven by \u201ca creative impulse, a musical urge, and a desire to express feelings with honesty.\u201d For <\/span>Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Llergo<\/b>, \u201c<\/span>it all began as a game with her grandfather when she was just a little girl<\/b>.\u201d She believes music chose her from birth, seeing it as \u201ca different way to understand the world, to communicate, and to turn pain into beauty.<\/span><\/p>\n Talking about <\/span>the main challenges they have had to face<\/b>, both artists highlighted the importance of separating personal identity from the public persona. For Llergo, \u201creal, full, and pure life is beign at her home, which gives her perspective,\u201d and she holds dear her grandfather\u2019s advice: \u201cSing, get paid, but don\u2019t sell out.\u201d Benegas added that for him, Donosti is a place where he can step back and \u201chang up the persona,\u201d as it\u2019s hard to maintain a life separate from one\u2019s profession without this separation.<\/span><\/p>\n Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 pointed out that the personas artists create can sometimes serve as an excuse to avoid self-improvement, while Pablo emphasized that great artists are \u201cpeople with depth, individual perspectives, and personality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The panel also explored the contrast between promoting a 1990s band and a current artist<\/b>. Llergo was clear in her view that being constantly involved with social media and promotion diminishes the quality of art: \u201cI think a lot about how I spend my time, whether I\u2019m wasting it or investing it, and when I\u2019m on social media, I feel like I\u2019m wasting it all the time.\u201d Pablo Benegas admitted that social media \u201cdemands a lot of time, and we\u2019re somewhat past that phase, able to stay somewhat apart from the industry\u2019s fast pace.\u201d However, he noted that \u201cthe market is volume-driven, and nowadays, songs don\u2019t get the second chance they once did.<\/span><\/p>\n Both artists agreed that social media comments should be taken with a grain of salt<\/b>. Pablo remarked that \u201cwhat\u2019s said on social media should never be a reason for anything,\u201d while Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9, who has been in therapy\u2014\u201cthe gym for emotions\u201d\u2014since releasing her first song in 2017, mentioned how it helps her manage feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n And lastly, another major topic was the lack of female representation in the music industry. <\/b>\u201cThere\u2019s still a lot to be done to equalize women\u2019s presence in the industry,\u201d Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 stated. \u201cAs a woman, you\u2019re undervalued and constantly questioned. You need a lot of patience to gain respect. Hopefully, a time will come when women don\u2019t have to be afraid.\u201d Pablo Benegas agreed, noting that \u201cthere\u2019s still a condescending attitude toward young female artists. When they reach the top, they don\u2019t get there the same way men do, as their journey takes a greater toll.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Music as a grand finale<\/b><\/p>\n In addition to this insightful discussion, BIME 2024 attendees enjoyed performances by <\/span>Riders of the Canyon and Fillas de Cassandra<\/b>, <\/span>two AIEnRUTa-Artistas groups, presented in collaboration with AIE, at Kaf\u00e9 Antzokia<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n Riders of the Canyon<\/b>, led by Joana Serrat along with Northern Irish musician Matthew McDaid and Barcelona\u2019s V\u00edctor Partido and Roger Usart, delivered a folk-rock performance characterized by superb harmony work.<\/span><\/p>\n The duo <\/span>Fillas de Cassandra<\/b>, composed of Sara Faro and Mar\u00eda P\u00e9rez from Vigo, took the audience on a journey through history, featuring heroines from classical mythology. They blend traditional melodies with new lyrics, inspired by oral traditions, and incorporate elements of pop and electronic music.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Once again, the Society of Performing and Executant Artists AIE has participated in this significant annual professional fair in Bilbao.
